Do you have a 2wd or 4wd? If you have a 4wd the torsion bar has to be unloaded and then pop the ball joint loose or if its 2wd put a jack under the lower control arm, pop the ball joint loose and drop the jack slow to release the spring.

I've changed top and bottom on my 97-2wd and I never removed either one, but I did have to get the Ball joint tool kit from Auto Zone on their tool borrow program. You pay a deposit but get it back when you return tool Kit.

If you have a 4x4 you will have to disconnect the uppers at the wheel assemby (1 nut each). I recommend that you search on line for Ford ball joint repair. There is a guy that has posted very good pictures and instructions. It is for a 4x4 but you can apply to a 2wd if need be. A 2wd will be less involved. You will need to rent a ball joint press.
