I've maquired mine at least 3 times in the last 6 months. Looks nice for about a month, then starts fading again. I'm now looking on ebay for some light sets , they are pretty cheap now, most run about 100 bucks for a set of 4, 2 sides and 2 fronts.

The purpose of sanding it is to cut through the damaged material. They will eventually get sand-blasted by road debris. Hitting them with clear will protect them better, but they will last a long time without, as well.

Stock headlights normally have some sort of a protective clear coating.

That's what the 3m kit is, minus the clear coat.
