Turning on 4x4 for first time in years what to do first?

Yea, if you don't know how to use the 4WD in these trucks properly, you can screw them up. I suggest reading your owners manual and following it literally when in doubt.

Personally I haven't had one problem except for the vacuum hoses deteriorating. But that's from age. This vehicle is 20 years old w/351,000 miles. I consider the 4wd in these a pretty good system...just have to use them right plus common sense. Folks test common sense all the time lol.

I only had shift motor failure so far.

I had one vehicle with manual hubs

And 3 with automatic hubs and floor mounted tcase shifter, before my f150

And an AWD with viscous cplg in powertrain

Never a single issue with any of the others. And the ones with auto hubs could be shifted on fly too under 50 or such .

You just had to back up to unlock....big deal. Less cv wear, better mileage too. Fords esof really not that good.
