Default Heater Core Issues

Do you have to discharge the AC system before you work with the heater core?

Not to my knowledge. IMO, would be a serious design flaw if that were required.

On my vintage, replacement of the heater core is so easy, it's ALMOST a pleasure. 20 minutes tops, including scrounging up the tools.

Well, again, not intimitely familiar with your vintage. The Haynes warning may be due to the level of difficulty of working on the HVAC box, and not necessarily having to do with evacuating the A/C system.

I recall some of the older cars I've worked on - just about had to pull the entire dash out to get to the heater core.

Hopefully, some of the other guys will chime in shortly.
