Default Truck Transmission Issues

My 2002 F-150 Ext. Cab (8ft bed) has no forward, but it has reverse [4R70W Transmission]. I suspect the forward clutch drum may have broken, but I am not positive. Is there a way to fix this without buying a whole new transmission and having it installed? Also does the 4R70W Transmission drop out or does it have to come out with the engine (sorry for dumb question, I don't know a lot about the nitty gritty stuff about cars.)

It comes out without the motor. If you can find someone who will fix just the drum (if that is your issue) then it would be cheaper. My Buddy will do that at his shop, but only does A 30 day warranty, and only on what he replaces. It winds up saving the customer 4 or 5 hundred dollars, but IMO, if you're paying to have it torn down, you may as well get it all done.

Now... back to the "dropping out". A 2wd is easier. The 4wd needs the cross member for the torsion bars removed for the t-case to clear on the way down. What do you have.... 2wd or 4wd?

BTW, have you checked your fluid level?

before the forward drive went, the fluid and filter were replaced.

Yeah, probably the forward drum then. Good news is, there is a beefier version available. I would recommend going to the Sonnax Smart-Tech replacement. Very, very good piece.

I have 2wd (sadly) and is it something that can be done without having to go to a shop to do?

Well, that is relative to how mechanically inclined you are and if you have the tools. There is a pretty decent video on YouTube on the teardown and build of a 4R70W that can show you visually what you will be facing.
