Default Transmission Confusion

Just need to confirm this, I need a transmission for a 97 F150 4.6 Liter. Have been told the tag number on the transmission needs to match the replacement transmission.
Is this a fact? The bad trans tag # is F75A-HA, so my replacement used trans need to have the same tag number?

That is correct. You can use a 97 ONLY. The wiring is completely different on a 98+ as well as some other minor things.

97's use actual wires on the internal harness...

The 98 and up use this "ribbon" that contains the wiring. Also, the harness pinout is completely different between the two.

Thanks. I found a 97 Expedition with a 4.6 Liter, and figured the trans would work in my truck. But upon comparing the tag numbers, they are different.
Glad I verified I need the same tag number before I pulled the Expedition tranny!

I do believe though that either a F75A-HA or F65A-HA would work. Should be identical. The F6 was in the early 97 trucks, and the F7 in the late 97's. I would pull the pan and see if it has wires or the ribbon. All 97's should be interchangeable, so long as you get the right configuration of 2WD or 4WD.

I find in Hollander that the 97 F150 has a CA and KA code and HA isn't shown. The Expedition shows Expy only in 97. Weird. Must be in the shift control so it has a softer shift than the trucks. Comfort I'll bet.

That's possible... but if you buy a kit for a 97 4R70W, or a valve body, you're getting the same thing for either one. Granted it was a 98, not 97, but the trans in my Expedition was from an F150. The previous owner busted the case on the original. That pic where I circled the ribbon in my post above was that trans in fact.
