Transmission bell housing not covered!
First post, so here is a little background
Bought a 2003 F150 Supercrew (4.6L, 4R70W Tranny) from a very eager seller for $3000, 2 months ago. His dad was the original owner and past it down to the seller after he past. He used it t commute to work and could no longer afford gas. He originally wanted $6000 but to my surprise bit on my offer of $3000. He said he had it for sale on Craigslist for 3 months with only flakes responding.
I have never owned a F150 before but Google is educating me nicely.
Here is the problem, when I was under the truck today replacing my fuel filter I noticed that I can see into the bell housing of the transmission and it looks like there should be a cover there.
From what I ascertained through some Google searches an inspection plate should go there.
Can you please help me figure out what goes here and where to buy it?
Thanks

Just an inspection cover. You can find in any junk yard or some transmissions shops will have a used plate laying around. Call around and you'll find what you want. They are a dime a dozen up here, but this is Alaska and we have more trucks than cars. Good luck.

Pop that black cap off and see if it's dry or if there is trans fluid in there. Looks like something might be leaking from your first picture.

I was thinking the same thing
Thank you for confirming what this part is called, aamco and a few other didn't have it but will call me when they get one.
Thanks for being observant, here are some pictures of what it looks like with the cap off. If you see anything wrong please let me know.

I just noticed this on my 06 5.4 while doing my oil change. Seen a golf ball sized hole in the transmission and freaked out, called ford and talked to a technician. He said its just the bellhousing dust plug and is quite common for them to go missing and nothing to be overly concerned about as it will not cause any damage... $10 for a new one here in British Columbia.
I thought it was a transmission drain plug and I was damaging my transmission...I was in a panic, never seen this on the 97 5.4 I used to have, then again the oil drain plug is 2" away from this hole so its impossible to miss on a 06. Maybe thats why I had not seen it on my 97.

The plug is to rotate flex plate/flywheel with screwdriver in order to get to the 4 nuts holding the TC to the flex plate . The bottom “dust flange” is to jam screwdriver in teeth to prevent from spinnning while breaking torque on same nuts. There’s another rubber seal similar to the bottom one that’s opposite the starter hole in which needs to be removed to access the TC nuts. This is all common when replacing or restoring Tranny or TC or real main seal.
