Default Transfer case WAY too full, 01 Screw

I checked the transfer case fluid this morning and this is almost all of what I drained...

Yes, I used the fill plug and not the drain plug.

Yes, I'm sure.

My transmission fluid seems to be at a good level.
Why would this be too full?

The main shaft seal of the transmission is probably starting to leak. I have had the same issue at one time. Get the trans hot before checking the fluid level.

I checked the trans level hot, but transfer case cold. Does that matter?

No it doesnt. I know fluid doesnt move back and forth. Try checking the trans cold to see. I know when mine started to leak it showed up better cold than hot.

I know when I worked at a quick lube shop some of our lower bay techs didn't know when to stop pumping fluid into a transfer case. They would place the nozzle in the fill hole and it fit tight enough u could over fill the transfer-case and when they moved the gun instead of letting the fluid drain down they would shove the fill plug back in leaving the tcase over full.. When I seen this I told the manger and we had a store meeting so all the lower bay techs would know how to add fluid correctly.... Jus saying this could have happened to your truck. Most quick lube ships offer some type of 4x4 services.

But I don't think anyone could pump a gallon of extra fluid in there, could they?

lol you would be surprised! They done the same with rear ends too... One time we had a upper bay tech add 12 quarts of oil..... And they didn't even catch it... The customer left and came back with the truck smoking terribly and sure enough I checked the oil on it and it was 3/4 way up the dip stick! I was like dude how the *** did u not see this?? And you let the truck leave??? The manger let that employe go after that.

Good point, lol.
As of yesterday, I made sure the fluid levels are good, so I will keep an eye on them. I am assuming that if the seal is leaking, the t case will go over full again, right?
