Default Trans skipping gear?

My '02 SuperCrew, w/ AOD, at 117k, skips the second to last gear almost all of the time. It falls on it's face when it shifts to o/d, and I was wondering if anyone has had a similar problem, and what can be done to fix it. I have taken it to a couple trans shops, and all tell me "it's going to go out at any time", and then give me a quote on a rebuild. If it does go, I'll be replacing it with a new trans myself, but I sure would like it to last another 4 years. Thanks for any help.

Try changing your trans fluid and filter, too see if there is any metal shavings or anything like that or maybe a whole gear.

Doing it this weekend. It was changed at 100k, and was pretty dirty, but no debris that could be seen or felt.

changing the fluid when u already have a trans problem will 9 times out of 10 promote more issues then fix. check the fluid first, and see if it smells burnt. sounds like one of ur shift solonoids, a clutch pak, or ur valve body is taking a dump on u. the clutch pak is severe, along with ur planitary gear sets would require a rebuild/"newish" transmission.

What is involved in changing a shift solenoid? I've never torn into a trans, but changing fluid/filter and even replacing the entire trans isn't a problem. I'll do what I can to fix it, or run it until it quits, then replace. I just had to buy a new car, and financed for 5 years, so if I can make the truck last another 4, without any major problems/repairs, I'll be ok. Thanks for the help.

personally, if it's already tht bad where it's missing gears, just ride it out til it quits and replace it with a good reman piece, and u can upgrade ur torque onverter while ur at it. cuz a normal trans service just drains the fluid in the pan and valve body. Not the trans cooling lines, or in the torque converter. so u still have about 7 to 10 quarts of bad fluid in the whole system. and if u wanna do the trans swap ur self be prepaired to have the truck out of commision for a few days to a week. get all the parts u need for the swap first and formost. cuz nothing worse then being in the middle of a swap thinking u can reuse some parts tht are meant for one time use. it's all in the prep work. and ur going to get trans fluid all over the place too, thts just how it is. no way around tht.

I imagine I will just ride it out. I have a lift at work to use, along with any tools I may need, including a tall trans jack.

A few of our maintenance guy can buy the trans from a local dealer that we have an account with, and they will honor the warranty if installed by those few guys.

I have heard about it causing problems, when before, there was nothing more that I slow leak. I added it to my sisters Escort, and it did stop the leak, but she sold it not long after, so what happened long term, I'm not sure. A local shop wanted $1700 to rebuild, so I'll run it until I'm standing on the side of the road.
