Tranny problem, I think
 

Ok guys I have an issue. First off its a 2002 xlt fx4 scab with 127k 4x4. Im running 315s with a 3.55 ls rearend.

I think my tranny ia going out. It slips whenever im rolling to a stop and then start to accelerate again. I thought it might be my rearend at first but now I think ita the tranny. It only does it when I start to take off, nothing happens when i punch it when im already going 10+mph. It will rev up to almost 1000 rpm sometimes more but I try not to be hard on it.
Is this the beginning of the end of my tranny?
I dont know if the fluid has ever been changed, I was gonna start with changing that and the filter and see if it continues. I know very little about transmissions and thought I could get some advice...

Well ford used a "lifetime" filter in these tranny's. Mine started acting similar so I changed the filter & put NEW fresh fluid in it & it cleared a lot of it up. That's not a cheap job but it's a lot cheaper than a new trans. I'd try that first before anything. Even if these automatics were some of fords weakest ones. Mines got almost 300,000 on it now & never even been out of the truck so I would look into a filter & fluid change. A lot of guys tried to talk me out of doing the filter change because they were afraid the the filters age along with the tranny's age in cobo was what held it together (I didnt get their logic then & still don't) that's why I did change it haha

I'd try a fluid change also. It might not cure it but I think it's worth a try. If nothing else, it might buy you a little more time.

Can someone tell me how to shut off the underline on my computer, LOL.

Alright ill do the fluid change and filter change. Is it just a matter of dropping the pan, letting it drain, and swapping out the filter, then pour new ATF in through the filler neck in the engine bay?

Be sure to remove the old grommet for the filter and properly install the new one. Plenty of cardboard under tranny before removing pan-you WILL spill some. Be sure to check fluid level after a good hard road test but warm it up at idle first.

Change the fluid, make sure to use the right weight for it. Could be your torque converter or it could be the tranny. The average life of the tranny they put in these trucks is only suppose to be around 150,000 to 200,000 km.
