Tranny help

2002 f150 fx4 lariat, 5 lug, transmission cooler, cai, dual flowmasters no cats, 229,000 miles. About 25% of the time, when I start the truck it revs up to about 2-2500 rpm like it has a vacuum leak and the overdrive light starts blinking. After a few minutes it will drop down to 600 and idle perfectly and the light stops blinking. I found a small leak where the transmission is clamped to the transmission cooler hose. l found a bigger leak on the left side and rear side of the pan gasket, or it could be coming down from what I think is the flywheel (front of transmission). Its a little low on fluid but I've honestly been driving it like this for almost a year. It slips a little bit if u brake hard or turn and dont let it settle back down. What I want to know is should I have it serviced? Flushed? Rebuilt? Or just replace those parts and fill er up. I would guess it's already been rebuilt or replaced, it doesnt look 16 years old to me

The O/D light blinking means the transmission is setting a code, take it to a transmission shop and have the codes read, that will at least give you some sort of starting point.

That leak is oil coming from the back side of the passenger cylinder head. I thought this issue was fixed by 2002. It was a design flaw in the casting.... can't do anything about it without disassembling the motor. Not really worth it unless you're tearing it apart for other issues.

As far as your light flashing, as JCR said - that is the transmissions version of the check engine light. Some scan tools can read those, some can't. I would go get it read, or get a reader with the capabilities. See what it is telling you.

Oh geez.... I think I might be looking at that picture wrong.... I see oil on the front of the motor too. Is that from the oil cooler adapter maybe?

The tranny code was p0705, and yes the oil filter leaks. I thought that was an easy fix. It's just a gasket right?

That's a bad PRNDL (often referred to as the Prindle switch) or its technical name is transmission range sensor. It's on the side of the trans, and it is the sensor for which gear you are in. Fairly common for them to need adjusted, or just be dead.
