Performance mufflers are the straight through designs , Magnaflow, Borla, Corsa, Bassani etc are straight through and perform. With these mufflers you can better performance over factory. Can be nice little increase if done correctly. Actually, the set up that netted true gains for 150's and expy's was the 3" cat back from Magnaflow back in the day. The system was dyno proven to plus 10 hp. It consisted of a 3" intermediate pipe (after the Y) into a Maggy Muffler then factory tail pipe.

It appears to me that they are going to try and re-brand/re-market it as "Hushpower by Flowmaster" instead of making it a part of their regular lineup.

And, FWIW, my personal favorite muffler if a MAC Flowpath. I've seen a couple comparisons with them against other brands, and they always fair well - and give you the throaty sound. They are loud though. So, if you want loud, this is your muffler. They outflow Magnaflow's. I have them on the Stang, and LOVE them.

It was a change for the better with Flowmaster. The introduction was a high performance series and it was in comparison to their older designs. I'm not sure how popular they are now in the performance market, but this design SHOULD net close to the same numbers of it's competitors.

Did you know there is a way to get the 5four to sound like a Stang under normal to mild acceleration ? Well there is or was. It wasn't a performance set -up, but the 5four can mimic a Stang, so much so you couldn't tell the difference under normal and somewhat loud acceleration. The set -up consisted of just the two upstream original cats and a SISO flowmaster 50 SUV series muffler. Yea , a very poor performance set-up because the muffler had many chambers and stuffed the pipes with dead gases that could find there way out. However a cool sound...yea, I had to try it when I was younger lol. Actually it's the set-up I used in my comparison video's. The vids were in the cab, 0-80. I recorded/documented the performance difference from that set up vs my LT header set up just for giggles. The difference was huge in performance, picked up 6 seconds 0-80 with LT's and a Magnaflow race series muffler. It was unexpected, I totally set up for low end torque improvement, Troyer was assisting here and there, from an info stand point. So, I had a pretty good guide lol. The truck noticeable had more low end, but it didn't stop there. The mid range 5four flat spot wasn't as prominent after LT's. As a by-product, the truck was a little quicker.

I’m 17 and today I went to a local muffler shop and asked how much it’d cost to install a flowmaster 40+custom tips on my 2001 F-150 5.4, the guy said $300 or $350 for a flowmaster super 10. How much did y’all pay for your exhaust set up and what do y’all have and is $300-$350 too much?
Yea that muffler is chambered which is far from a straight pipe. Chambered designs block flow, exhaust gases die in the pipes so performance suffers. Power, torque and mainly "part throttle response" is the trade off for that Flowmaster sound. Those mufflers are all about sound and nothing more. Not even close to a straight pipe.
One of the advantages of Flowmaster's chambered muffler technology vs. a comparably sized ‘straight through’ muffler is the interior volume that each muffler can handle. If you were to take a 2.5” inlet/outlet ‘straight through’ muffler (which is just the volume of the length and inner diameter of the tubing passing through the muffler) and fill it with fluid and then empty it into a measuring cup. Then, do the same thing with a comparably sized 2.5” inlet/outlet Flowmaster muffler. The Flowmaster muffler would hold considerably more water than the ‘straight through’ 2.5” piece of tubing. This added volume allows less resistance (more volume for the exhaust inside the muffler) and a ‘relief’ vs. the same sized tubing of a straight through design. Another benefit is, as the exhaust splits and travels around the deflector (the V shaped baffle) and joins back together behind the deflector to exit through the collector, it does two things. First, it creates an area of low pressure behind the deflector plate resulting in a “pulling/scavenging” effect helping pull the following pulses through the exhaust. Second, the deflector acts as a one way check valve and eliminates the sound waves and exhaust from reversing and running back up the pipes to the engine, messing with the tuning. The end result of this added scavenging is a cleaner burn in the combustion chamber because you're affectively reducing the contamination (unburnt gases left in the combustion chamber) which = more torque and more horsepower. You are correct that we did formerly refer to our Laminar Flow mufflers as "Hushpower". However, we have since moved them under the Flowmaster name as our dBX, Pro Series, and Super HP-2 mufflers. I think it's too much
the flowmaster 40 is $86 brand new from amazon (directly from flowmaster)
my local muffler shop will cut out the old muffler and weld in a new one for $60-$80
I had 3" piping and a flowmaster 40 put in for roughly $240 installed...the 3" did put down a wee bit more power
