Default Time to get hands Dirty

Well the streak is over, i bought my 02 truck with 4 miles on it. Hadn't had a problem or anything done on it but routine maintenace im at 114,000. Went out to go to work and the starter lugged....i was shocked tryed to start it again and it made a clicking sound. The truck didn't start, so i figure something need's replacing. After i attempted to start the truck the dash was acting a bit crazy. Im thinking it either the battery but more likely the alternator. How can i determine which one it is???

Jump start the truck. Once it is running undo the negative battery cable. If it continues to run, the alternator is probably fine. Then let it charge and test the battery (if you don't have a battery tester places like Autozone can do it for you).

Was told by the dealership, the crazy gauges are from a bad battery. Mine was still starting normally, battery was 6 or 7 years old, so I replaced it. Problem solved, why the gauges peg out like that but I still had enough to start the engine is a mystery to me.

When I got the crazy gauges it was my battery that died. But if your alternator is shot then that would drain your battery so its better if you take it to any parts store they will be able to test out the electrical system for you

Tried the trick with disconnecting the negative and the truck didnt skip a beat, so im off to have the battery tested.
