Default Transmission Compatability?

Guys,

Having problems with my 4r70w in my 4.2L in my 99' F150. The truck will not shift into 4th and after trying all the solenoids (replacing) and the accumulators we are pretty sure the clutch's are shot. Pulling the pan there was a ton of metal shavings/crud stuck to the magnet and it's burning the fluid pretty good. I am looking for a used one to put in cause I really can't afford a rebuild. What year's/models will work for the 4r70w in my truck for a direct/plug and play replacement? I'm looking to get one off of craigslist or locally in a junk yard to get me by as the truck already has 170K on the clock. Also any places you recc to find one from? Thanks for your help and let me know.

Hello,
My 4r70w went also in my truck. Junkyards usaully charge about 600 for a the 4r70w and Ammco would charge about 1600 to rebuild it. Theres a junkyard where I live called EZ pull in New Ringgold, PA where it would only cost you 35.00 to pull a trans yourself but thats a hard job. I have a 2000 F150 but it has a 2001 4r70w and i found out that the trans filter is different so i dont know the years of compatibilty. Although with my truck I bough a TCI super rebuild kit for about 400 and I am in the process of rebuilding the trans. On the internet you can find complete 4r70w tear down manuals and even videos. If you good with tools, have a lot of them and are patient you could try to rebuild a lot of people dont recomend it. I take my truck off roading and I race it a lot so thats why I'm rebuilding it with a TCI kit. To answer you question I would call up the ford dealer to find out the years, I know that the 97-03 F150s are the same but I dont know about the driveline.
Hope this helps,
Brian

Below is from a salvage interchange index that I have access to, for 2wd and 4wd respectively. It looks tough as only a 99 year will fit your truck.
