Default swap heads or rebuild block

Hiya new member here....very informative site.

Got a 98 f150 off a friend and needed engine work.Took the 4.6 out and found a spun bearing.Think lack of oil changes lead to this bearing wearing down to paper thin and warn away about 1/4 inch on the journal.Besides that rest looks fine no scouring anywhere and no discoloration on rods ect.

Would it be more advisable to try to rebuild this block, tho i have never rebuilt a block befor or swap the heads which are preety new cause he had new ones put on to a 2000 4.6 out of a police crown vic with 100k miles on it or so.

Block from salvage yard is gonna be about $400 meanwhile crank with main and rod bearings from advanced auto is 250 ish.

From what have read exspensive special tools are needed to rip the crank out......so not sure if want to go this route.

So beyound the whole thing of new internal parts would it be easier to swap the heads to a block then try to undergo a project like rebuilding one?

Default what are you trying to achieve

I would say you need to figure out what your trying to get out of the motor. It will all depend on budget etc to what route you should go but Im in for pics of the build either way.

Only special tools are required while timing is being done which is very important. As far as the bottom half easy fix have everything machined and put it together.

Everything has to be machined even if not changing the rods and pistons?
Was gonna install crank, main and rod bearings and probably oil pump.......would this be a probablem with somthing important that im missing?

Also on alldata it shows taking the heads off for dismantling the engine but if im not gonna touch anything in the top end do i have to take the heads off?

Thought there was a way to do the timing without the tools...guess i was mistaken.Guess if gonna need em to do the timing gonna have to get em regardsless if swapping the heads to a different block or rebuild the old one.

Crankshaft Rebuilders Crankshaft Kit

Seems like a good deal....any issues that anyone can see with this kit?

I see nothing wrong with it but if I was going to do all that would I would rebuild the whole engine

Well unless there is a pressing need i figured didnt really need a whole rebuild.Would save on the cost of pistons, rods, rings.Since dont have to take the heads off to change the crank then dont have to get new head bolts as well as the gasket kit....job almost triples in cost if do the pistons.

If had to take the heads off then prob would lean towards doing everything i guess.

Unless there are some issues then rather not do it if dont have to.

Have you tried looking around local part/junk yards? Sucks that happened from what I have seen not a very common thing to happen obviously it was lack of general maintenance... if you could find a donor motor in good shape piece it together that way. Other than that treat her right give it a healthy new motor forged internals whole 9 yards ha dont really have to but would be nice right... Also as a side note 5.4 is very versatile with the 4.6
