Supercharger question with video. F150 Lightning
So here we go.
I picked up the Lightning today after taking it in for 2 rear tyres and a seized ball joint on the passenger side.
After the car was throughly looked over by my American specialist it was decided to swap out a good few more bits while at it to save a trip back every month for the next worn out part. Below is picture of what came off and was replaced.
Total bill £1450 / $2300
Anyway on the drive home I was happily rolling along thinking how nice and tight it feels. almost like a new truck. It still only has 29,350 miles on it so all the parts are just worn due weather mainly and bloody speed bumps.
As I was listening to the truck with the radio off for a change to hopefully hear no rattles or bangs I noticed that there was a new noise when I accelerated. I thought maybe a leaf stuck on the grill whistling in the wind but then I thought NO! supercharger!!!!
I pulled over a few miles later. The truck had done 20+miles by this point so the belt would have been warm and not making its usual cold sound.
Anyway it sounds like the bearings are grumbling or squealing a bit to me.
I have not done anything to it yet other than look at it and am hoping maybe I can replace and top up the oil in the Eaton unit and that will fix it. It will be tomorrow now before I get a chance to look at anything so thought I would post a video of it on here to see if the community have had any experience with this problem and am I looking in the right area?
A little history on the Truck. It spent I think 2006-2014 in storage not been used at all then came out in June? had a full service and new belts etc and was then sold to me a couple of hundred miles later. I don't have any receipts for the service to know if the supercharger oil was replaced and I would suspect not as there not a general item to service i hear?
Anyway here a video of the engine running. Hopefully the link works.
p.s. I did have a good pull about on the pulley with the engine off and I can't feel any movement, Feels solid.
The video link shows up as a really tiny picture for some reason but when I click it it takes me to photo bucket to play. If it won't let you view it due passwords tell me and ill put it on youtube.
The Supercharge pic.
And heres a couple of pics today from collecting it in the snow and then back on the drive just for fun.
Yes that is my Harley in the garage you can just about see. A 2008 Fat Bob Stage 2 with 15k on it now. Love my american rides.

The supercharger oil shouldn't ever need to be changed, certainly not at that low mileage. The only time you really change it is if you take it apart for some reason, or if it leaks, but your supercharger snout is nice and clean, so it doesn't look like yours is leaking at all. Also, that really sounds more like a belt noise than a bearing noise. Usually when the bearings go in those, it sounds like a bunch of marbles bouncing around in the supercharger, not the high-pitch squeal that you are hearing. The first thing I would do would be take the belt off, inspect it, and also spin the supercharger as well as the tensioner and idler pulleys by hand to see if any of them are binding up or making noise.

Is taking the belt off a home job with average tools or do I need some special kit. I have a spare new belt that came with the car. Previous owner told me he had one fitted when it was serviced and bought a spare. To the best of my recollection anyway.

Sounds just like an idler pulley. Take off the belt by using a 1/2 in racket or breaker bar inside the tensioner. It's a bit tight in there, but it can be easily done. But make sure the supercharger spins easily by hand, if it does then your probably fine. Just grease those idlers.

So here we have a 2nd video from today.
All I did was remove the coolant expansion tank from position then drown the pulleys in WD40 with the engine off. Ran it a minute and put some on the best I could with the pulleys spinning then did another soak with the engine off again
It seems to have immediately taken away 80%+ of the noise comparing to yesterdays video so possibly there just a bit dry.
I currently have the truck running on the driveway to get it up to full temperature so may take a 2nd video once it is depending if there is any change (1 video = no change)
Should I be looking at other steps to keep it all lubricated and quite on the pulleys or do they generally look after themselves?
I did not take the belt off to spin the charger as to be honest I was not sure how to and worried I would do more harm than good in trying. My worry was do I need any special tools to get it on or off? I could not see how to release the tension without just removing lots of bolts on the tensioner unit. Maybe I am looking at it wrong?
