Just curious.... do you folks have the single or two row radiators?

Both of mine have a two row, and have never given me an ounce of issue.

Mine never gave me any problems until my sensor went bad either, and I have a one-row radiator which is more than enough cooling capacity for South Mississippi summer heat with the air conditioner running full blast all the time.

When your sensor goes bad your temp indicator will probably skyrocket, then your truck may go into limp mode even though it's not really overheating. This was my experience anyways. The new sensor fixed this issue immediately.

Thanks owkaye for the affirmation that the over heating problem is not unique my F150.

I too went thru the same sequence of adding coolant as it was often below cool level mark and later seeing it overflow when hot. I agree this may point to blockage in the heater core.

In the meantime, which sensor did you replace which resolved the problem with temporary over heating causing engine to go in limp mode? Was it the CHT sensor or other one?

From what I recall, my 2003 with 4.6L engine has only one sensor, and I think it's called the CHT (cylinder head temperature) sensor. It's behind the alternator, tucked up under the intake manifold. I'm pretty sure I removed the alternator to get at it. There's hardly any space in there to get a wrench on it.

Terzkis: As you probably read, I too had the same momentary overheat issue. My 97 F150 8 cyl. had 2 sensors - the sensor u want is BEHIND the alternator, was difficult to get to (unless taking apart the manifold which i wasn't doing). If you're gonna access it thru the alternator, scroll up a few dozen posts where I linked to a stubby box wrench that was perfect for the job.

owakeye & White GT - I ended up selling the truck a few months later. I was asking $1,500 and got it, which was more than it was worth in that condition - and if no one paid, I was happy to ride it out. I did disclose the HG leak and he was okay with it. I wrote to the guy a few weeks ago, curious, to see how he fared with it but he didn't reply back.

Sincere thx to you guys & everyone else in this thread. Learned a ton.

ok 2007 5.4 gage goes up to max when towing a trailer without trailer it is fine. water pump had a drip out the weep hole so that was replaced. still goes to h only when towing I did 150 miles without trailer and it is fine. no exhaust smell in filler cap holds pressure no leaks runs fine no shutter until it goes to hot then computer starts to shut down piston firing and cuts down the power to limp mode I'm lost

Not 2007 forum.

But what kind of shape is cooling system in? How well maintained?
Did you replce tstat? It could be stuck in one position, not opening fully. Buildup in cooling system also reduces flow and heat transfer. Then theres fan performance too
