I hear you. These are pricey because they come with external crossovers and are highly efficient. I'm looking to get at least $80 out of them. You could always get good ones for your fronts and go a little cheaper for the back.

So my understanding is that there are 5x7's in the door and 6x8's in the back? Just making sure...sometimes the / means something different to folks.

No, 5x7 or 6x8 speakers will fit perfectly.

It is possible to buy speakers that sound worse than the stockers. I did a lot of reading before I ordered mine. Get speakers that are very efficient. That way you won't end up needing to spend money on an amp to drive them. There are plenty of options out there, probably not at WalMart unfortunately.

Look for speakers with a high sensitivity rating. Also, if you put good speakers in the front, you'll never even hear the rear speakers. Unless you want happy passengers in the back seat

I'm powering my Fosgates with the STOCK external amp that came with the '97 and '98 Lariats. Results are GOOD, meaning better than original, but can be better. In a recent Crutchfield circular, they tested new head units with stock speakers, and that's where the biggest bang for the buck was. The posters here are correct - go with an EFFICIENT set of speakers, so that any head unit can push them, and not at the limit of the amp (internal of external). You'll avoid clipping (distortion) and dissatisfaction with your purchases.

I replaced all the stock speakers with jl audio speakers and got an infinity basslink (10" self powered sub) its the perfect setup imo. The great crisp clear JL door speakers are kept in check by the good bass thats just the right amount. (not rap blasting bass but still enough to rattle the rear view mirror off.) its all being pushed by a sony explode deck. Took me a lil while to get all the settings dialed in on the deck and the sub but it sounds amazing to me. The sound quality is just right.
