So, would it work to remove the repair kit that is in it and put the CalVan in? Or no?

There is a smaller oversize kit
it depends on your hole
If exhaust ate it out, you can need larger
id inspect hole threads with borescope, and measure insert, and pick smaller kit that might work first, so have one more shot with larger if mess up. (Another $400 is still cheaper than pulling head at that point.)

Or. .. .pay someone

Timesert makes an oversize insert.
Call and tell them what you are working with, I'll bet they can help.

What I would do is, pull that Dorman fix out.... if you can. With a bore scope, inspect the threads. If they don't look bad, thread lock that SOB and give it another go. I've seen people stick them in without thread lock and experience what you are. This is also common symptom on heli-coil fixes.

did You use the cal van kit 38900? If you used one of those crap ones that most auto parts stores sell then that’s your problem right there. The cheap garbage ones don’t work. I use the cal van kits and I also mix a little JB weld and put on the top shelf of the new insert before I thread it into new threads
