Just to take them off so I can paint them without worrying about masking anything off.

I don't think there's a good careful way to do that. I recall resorting to giving them a good quick yank to remove.

It's a toss up what I would do now, I might just mask then paint. Only because there's a chance that seam may not be as perfect as it was if I remove. But, I can mask the truck pretty quick as well, not a big deal. I have large enough garbage bags that I can drive right into.

With a putty knife, you can tuck that bag right into the seam...no taping required. I took mine off because I had a rust repair behind in the past. Probably best not to flex it after paint, that way would prevent it. Not to mention it gives you a good secure surface to work with for sanding and repairs.

FWIW, I recently pulled the left rear flare off my truck, and it came off and went back on without a hitch. That said, there is the possibility of breaking clips and/or the flare itself if the plastic has become brittle over the years. Masking/bagging might be the best bet.

I'm probably just going to mask it off, but out of curiosity how do the clips work. Like do you just pull the flare towards or whatever because the farthest I got was getting the screws off and tried pulling but couldn't tell what was still holding them on and didn't want to risk breaking anything.

Maintenance trumps modification, any day. Keep that mentality and you'll be able to modify without worrying about the platform. Words I live by.Show'em Off!!! Post up 97-03 trucks!-photo13.jpg

Haha yes! Take good care of them and they'll grow over the years. Feed it plenty of MC oil
