It's a toss up what I would do now, I might just mask then paint. Only because there's a chance that seam may not be as perfect as it was if I remove. But, I can mask the truck pretty quick as well, not a big deal. I have large enough garbage bags that I can drive right into.
With a putty knife, you can tuck that bag right into the seam...no taping required. I took mine off because I had a rust repair behind in the past. Probably best not to flex it after paint, that way would prevent it. Not to mention it gives you a good secure surface to work with for sanding and repairs.

FWIW, I recently pulled the left rear flare off my truck, and it came off and went back on without a hitch. That said, there is the possibility of breaking clips and/or the flare itself if the plastic has become brittle over the years. Masking/bagging might be the best bet.

So good maintenance makes them grow all up big and strong like that ?
