Lightbulb S&B Cold Air Intake

Is anyone out there currently running or know anybody running this setup. Just looking for some speculation about this setup in general, if its liked or not. I am about to purchase one, and YES THROUGH THE SEARCH feature i have read pretty much every thread about CAI and a majority like and are running K&N 77 series, but not much is said at all about the S&B, so again any information would be greatly appreciated. Just bought this truck like 4 days ago, 2002 fx4. I have a pretty much bone stock 5.4. Only thing ive done so far is my "exhaust" or lack there of....block back straight pipes. Im not worried about hearing the intake because I can barely hear myself think while in the cab. Thanks for your help guys. Its my first f150 as ive been muddin early 80's toyotas for the longest time, but now i've moved on and let my past be my past. Thanks in advance

S and B have solid air filters. I ran one on my Mustang for a while. I ended up switching it because I didn't like the lack of a heat shield but the filter itself and tubing was well built.

Not a ton of people know about them as they don't market nearly as aggressively as K @ N and the like but S @ B has been around a LONG time and hey, can't go wrong with a million mile warranty!

If I was going to drop that much money on a CAI it would be on the Volant, not the S&B. I just think they look cheesy. Just get what YOU think looks the best. The physical power gains are negligible IMO.

I've been running S&B on my truck for over two years now. If I had to do it over I would have done the Gotts mod, put in an Amsoil dry filter, and called it a day. That being said, the only dislikes that I have about the S&B is that it is an open filter and does not have the box like for the newer trucks and it will growl a little more at idle and wide open. I ended up making my own heat shield which keeps intake temps around ambient. The only reason I still have mine on is because it's paid for and my custom tunes are written for this intake. Hope this helps.

Yea I can definitely see your point with the heat shield issue, and also marginal gains between the diff brands. Would having a diff hood, as in one with airfow, like some kind of ram air, play any part in choosing which CAI to purchase.

I have a comprehension issue with the idea of a "heat shield". Heat is a fluid, meaning it will radiate and fill whatever container/area it is in. Unless the filter is completely contained on all sides there is no shielding anything. The only way to effectively keep heat away is with a self contained unit(like the stock unit) or the Volant system(basically anything with a box).

But even with an enclosed box, heat will still transfer to the system.

You're correct in that thinking. The aluminum "shield" I made extends up to the hood and around to the fender. This topped with weatherstripping creates a good barrier from the heat at normal speeds but when stopping in town, cruising at 20mph, ect the temps slowly rise due to the heat soak. Volant is a $200+ version of the Gott's mod. That's why if I did it over I'd do the Gotts.
Even with a different hood some heat is going to get to an open intake and the "ram air" doesn't really create any pressure into the system.

just to let you know i don't know a whole lot about the CAI's but i ordered my K&N FIPK for like $250. www.gripmotorsports.com it came with the dyno sheet on a bone stock F150 with a 5.4 and just the CAI added likt 12.9hp and like 9 foot lb of torque.

Heat is not a fluid. Heat is an energy. Air is a fluid. Heat transfer can occur from convection or conduction or radiation, but the first two would be the means in an engine bay. Sorry. This is an old thread, I was searching for reviews on S&B intakes and saw this. Don't want people getting false information.
