Default removing remnants of old gasket

this isn't as clean as I want it, and not sure where to proceed from here

I have already used foaming engine degreaser on it, and given it a pretty liberal 1600 psi pressure washing

It's pretty much a Scotch Brite pad. You would have to hold it there for a really long time to cut into it.

The courser ones will destroy aluminum w a small grinder. 180 or 240 w aluminum.

You could get it done with die grinder or drill and rolocs, - most definitely wouldn't be my first choice unless you had limited space. For heads (exhaust /intake) and manifold mating surfaces, if you use a little palm sander w/3m pad, you'll get the surface balanced and uniform right quick w/o question. I used an old 1/4 sheet Makita for prep for years, recently picked up a nice Ridgid 1/4 sheet with variable speed. Both will do a great job, but the variable speed is a huge asset lol.
