Removing rear cats?
#21
Nice, it's been solid since 2007. My downstream cat cracked across the bottom passenger side. The rest were fine. I was towing a car hauler at the time. I needed more low end. For kicks I did before and after vids (they are around here somewhere), Picked up 6 seconds 0-80.
I ran just the upstream cat and stock manifolds for years before that, a ton of folks did back then. Then I went with headers and magnaflows. That's the way it is today.
I didn't use that Y in the pick. That's a 3" Y, it's called an "Off Road Pipe". It's meant for WFO Racing. Iused it to make a custom intake instead, -
I used a Y like this, -
Pacesetter 2.5" Y ^^^.

You do that yourself? How much did you spend?

Yes, did all the work. Was a cheap project...a little over 300 In fact. I documented a write up on it at another site way back when....how to improve your low end dramatically, at little cost.
Was a major success...much more than expected. I wasn't going for speed, - was intended just low end, more pulling power. As it turned out, I had gains throughout the power band. The videos proved a solid 6 second gain in acceleration. One of the best parts of the project was that you don't have to custom tune. Used the factory original tune. That's only possible IF you seal the seems and it doesn't leak.
I copied some of the write up to a thread on this site awhile ago, -

Here's a slice and dice pic...First time I modded the exhaust, -
One the first builds, GT build. Managed to get the 5four to sound exactly like a GT under normal acceleration. It was a head turner for sure, fun for awhile lol. Basically a rear cat delete with a Slowmaster SUV 50 series muffler...only way to do it,
More fun with high flows, -here I was setting up to cut the collars to weld in 3" slip fit header collars. Headers used are the longest produced for these trucks. To save room, this had to be done, -
This pic was from a vid made showing the ONLY easy way to install the passenger side. The piece circle (AC line) is a bracket that must be removed first, header pushed far forward then back into place. This way you didn't have to lift the engine or other extremes just to get them in place. Folks were having a tuff time with this way back when...discovered a simple way and documented, -
Header shots, cut in the O2 sensors here, -
Leak proof header gaskets and EGR, -

I hollowed out the front pre cats on a 2000, it was a pain to weld it all back together though. However its still mostly quiet except you can hear a raspy sort of exhaust leak noise that comes from the empty cats, it does however greatly improve throttle response at lower rpm, a lot more Zip, quite noticible. I used spark plug de-foulers on the o2's to make sure I got no codes, worked!
