Its a little more complex than that

- do you have remote entry already? Electric locks if not?
- do you want to keep your current remote
- do you want alarm system,or do you have one?
- do you want start confirmation?
- what range do you want
-are you capable of installing? Its not easy. If not you need to buy locally probably.
- what else do you want it to do? Turn on ac/heat? Heated seats? Defroster?
- how big a remote you willing to carry? Lcd display?
- willing to use spare key approach, or want it programmed to talk to PATS? Having key in vehicle can result in theft .
- do you have the two original keys required to program PATS? Copies wont work. $150 trip to dealer if you dont....

- ok with idiosyncracies? For instance if use existing remote, and lock doors repeatedly inside car, engine will start......so if kids play in car...

All the remotes will be good. It depends on what you want.

I've been reading a ton and I'm starting to shy away form the project all together. Let me answer your questions and see if you can give me more focused advice if you got the time.

-I don't have remote but do have power locks
-Don't care too much about an alarm but do want some type of shutoff anti theft system with the remote starter (i think most do have that from what I've read)
-Biggest reason I want this is to defrost and warm the truck up before I leave the house so I don't need confirmation or much range. I can see my truck while I pour my coffee.
-I'd like to put keyless entry in as well and would like the remote to be small (just buttons)
-I am willing to use spare key approach. I only have one original Key

What brands make decent kits/remotes and where is everyone ordering their parts? Is CarID any good?

I'll be going the EVO-ONE route. I've read many good things about them and installation looks to be pretty straight forward.

That looks like a solid/straight forward enough setup but they are only compatible with 99 and newer. Not sure why.

Any if the "big-name" systems (DEI, Code-Alarm, AutoPage, Fortin, etc.) will perform well. The key to a reliable, well-functioning system is more the quality of the install than the name on the unit. I reviewed many options before deciding on an Encore system. It's been working fine since December.

I believe the '99-up stipulation is because that's when the PATS system was introduced in the F150 so a bypass kit is required, and prior to this, the system can be wired directly.

I wanted the two-way remote, so I opted for the Encore E9. There are a number of other options, though. I bought the kit from Sonic Electronix. I also installed a DEI 506T glass-break sensor and 507M tilt sensor.

Seeing your "wish list," the E5 would be the one I'd look at.
