Lets just say that if it did just happen to come from the factory with keyless, it is the old system. And it sucked. Losing the key fob was far more common on those systems. If it is the Code Alarm system, those remotes are getting scarce. I actually have one, brand new somewhere that I'd be willing to sell if you figure out that is what system it has. The Code Alarm is a black box with a big blue sticker that says Ford on it.
It will look like this.... I think there is another version that says vehicle security system on it....

Hey guys,
I believe you could get a factory remote on a 97.
I have one on my old truck and the window sticker from Ford show it in the factory accessories column.
In the factory optional equipment column it says remote k/less entry / anti theft .
Key is kinda small so I would say no.
If you lock with the remote then open with key you will set off alarm and need to turn ignition in less than 15 secs or so.
If you lock with remote and pull inside handle (reaching arm through open window) it will set off alarm immediately, and you turn ignition to turn it off.
That is both ways I have set it off over the years.
It also only has a very small GEM, not as big as the ones in the usual pics and no big black box in the cab anywhere,
Over the many things I've had to do over the years I've seen all the cab at one time or another.
Old system or new type, it does work.
I did disable the panic button by taping over the contacts on the last battery change. That thing was too easy to push.
Mine is a 6/96 truck. When my Buddy ran it through OASIS back when I bought it, he said there was never an option for keyless/alarm in 97. Dealer only.
This is making me wonder..... all I've know is wrong, lol.
