I've also installed a dozen or so used engines over the years.
the very first one I got went exactly 7 miles and threw a rod, bummer

the rest have been well worth the money, I've never paid more than $400 for a used engine and installing myself is only my time.
I see a lot of talk about not doing things twice, well I got plenty of time

lately I see used engines a lot on line for $1200-$2000 WTF? no way!

I think it's funny how every engine you see for sale is low mileage?

I posted on page 1 (from past experience) over a year ago about why I would choose used over a reman any day. You take a chance either way, but the loose is much greater when you dealing with most re-man companies if they fail. They'll hassle you, and fight their way out of making good on the warranty's. The hassle, the hoops and journaled documentation you must put up with and provide is a big turn off, - let alone what it can do to your finances. These problems grossly outweigh the ones you may entertain going with a used engine. I would never go reman. If I didn't have a choice, it would come from Ford. IME Ford remans have been pretty much trouble free. I can't think of a bad experience or anyone who has reported one w/manufactures reman engine.

Anyway, it sucks what apollumi had to go through, I hate seeing that. Such a huge expense that for most of us, would be difficult to recoup!

Personally, I haven't purchased used for myself, but have for countless others in the past and haven't had one that failed. Is it luck ? Yes, that plays some roll I guess. But yards have a short warranty. During that time you can cover your **** by compression testing correctly and look for any other signs of concern. The odds are with you. If things go wrong, it can only set you back so much which is nowhere the potential of what a reman can cost you in the end.

Go used, - if the prices for used are a little more now, now you know why.

Guess I'm necro'ing my own thread (from four years ago). But since I always get irritated when nobody ever finishes their tale here I am.

My truck is running great as of right now on the AER engine. After getting my COP properly anchored down (from being very loose earlier) I decided to just replace it with a new COP. I also had an alternator go out and fixed some shenanigans with the air filter so those were replaced also. The COP mounting threads were not bad like I thought they might be, it's just that whoever put my engine in didn't tighten that one down. This tells me he had already put the fuel rails in before tightening it and if you do that this particular COP is a nightmare to tighten. So I think the guy just forgot about it. Doesn't mean I'm forgiving of them. I took off work three times and had to pay for a taxi back and they just told me nothing was wrong while giving me the "This dude is an *******" look. They have a very belated negative review coming. Not a one star review but definitely losing some points for the follow through which they left on me to fix.

To sum it up I'm quite happy with my AER engine currently. The engine is running so smooth it's hard to tell it's idling sometimes. I took the Truck to have it inspected last year and the guy said he was impressed and that it ran smoother than most new trucks. I don't know about that but it is the experience I had imagined and hoped for when I started this. Oh, and Motorcraft 5w-20 and Motorcraft filters all the live long day. Hoping to get at least 200k miles out of it. Probably more..

P.S. Talked my wife into buying a used 2003 Ford Expedition. Same gear ratio (same rear end?), same engine, same oil and filter, etc.. The last year of the dependable 5.4L 2 valve engines.

My AER engine has 70k on it, runs great as well.

Big $$$ into old trucks is a gamble. Mine paid off this time.

Default Update on Jasper reman

So you think Ford wouldn't install a Jasper Engine lol. That comment right there proves your serious lack of knowledge. It's comments like that which started your little fiasco.

I just can't believe you think Ford isn't an authorized Jasper engine installer. You know, the Ford remans put Jasper to shame, these aren't as plentyful and when they are, they cost a fair bit. Ford will put any engine in a vehicle you want.

Sorry again OP, - yea I won't be replying to this trolls idiocies any longer.
4 years and 72,300 miles later and she's still running like new.
Like I said before your little tangent... I think we both know you haven't seen two Jaspers fail back to back without it being an incredibly incompetent install, and NOT the fault of Jasper or the engine.

Who's the troll?

Let me throw this out there, since this a rehashed thread.

I just looked all around, doing price comparisons and quality checks on different reman's. For my 98 (Red), with a 5.4, I found it cheaper to buy mine thru the local dealer. Ford has a larger core charge but that's what credit cards are for. You get it back as long as the rods aren't falling out of the block, lol.

I tried Autozone, O'Reilly's, Advanced, etc. but all were 3000 or a bit more. All those had a freight charges of 150 too, where the dealer does not with a stock order. Total paid fee is 2573 for the longblock w gaskets + 850 core. This is with a 3year/unlimited miles. The labor, I got a flat rate of 1500 for the install. I'm furnishing fluids and filters, belts/hoses, etc. It pays to still have friends.

Dealer parts desks will usually give you 20% off , mechanic discount. Upfront on big things for over counter sales.

Its dealers labor thats the killer at $150/hr for 20 hrs book time

When i shopped, list was $3700 at dealer, over counter was $3200 with tax i think

Picking up/returning core to dealer is also pita for a diy without a fork truck.....

Most shops....wont pass the discount on to you...they want to pocket the parts markup. They do this on all parts.

Core has to be basically rebuildable to receive credit...

Default Used vs Reman

I got a crate 4.6 2v out of Texas for $2450 w/ install kit ( belt, hoses, filters, water pump, plugs, thermostat ) for an additional $350. Shipping was free & lift gate service was $50
BOTH ways. And another $1500 for labor. But I went a lot further & replaced the radiator, complete EGR system, new coils, wires, & while at it installed short tube headers. Since install its been flawless. Changed the oil at 500, will do so again at 1500 & then again at 3000. After that its synthetic. Hoping I have a keeper.
