Default Rebuild/Replace time - where do I get engines?

My truck has been meticulously cared for that now has 448,000 miles. She hasn’t so much as even required a new transmission. But, I have either a loud tap or knock that developed as I was driving over the highway for 3 hours. It was barely noticeable at first but now that it’s parked it’s pretty clear. It sounds like it’s coming from the passenger wheel well so….so could be valve train or rod. I don’t know. I don’t have tools to diagnose where I am.

Either way, it has a 100 mile journey home…hopefully it makes it but if not, it’s going to probably need a rebuild if it doesn’t make the trip.

But…shops don’t really do that anymore so I guess I need a crate motor. With that, where do I look? I’d rebuild myself but I don’t want my truck tied up waiting on me for two years as I find time to do it.

It's been awhile, you can also check out Promar as well. AFA remanufactured.

I think you can get a used up to about 2010. That would require using your existing intake up for plug and play.

Those even seem dated nowadays.

Check out a few things first too. Loose plug, exhaust leak, lash adjusters, followers..... Stethoscope w/long screwdriver or extensions. Attempt to pinpoint/narrow it down.

yes. I intend to check this out closer. The problem is I have an 80 miles drive in its current condition before I can do that. We’ve drive hundred or even thousands of mile on collapsed lifter on a 2013, but this sounds…different. Not much I can do.

I might pour something thick in it for the trip.
STP type stuff.

any particular product you like from them? I think she has a 5 or 10w 30 in now. It doesn’t burn oil…visibly…but oil does get consumed somehow. But again…450k miles.

I got it home. It sounds more like a rattle. For lack of a better description, it sounds like a louder version of my 6.7 Diesel. The noise seems NOT to be in block. It's in the front passenger side, possibly the front ish.

Here is a video.

This is a diagnostic sound to me. It's not a rod knock. So, I guess it has something to do with valves or the timing chain. I don't know which or how to diagnose further.

Time to remove the front cover and inspect.

I wish someone made a complete kit of motorcraft parts for the timing chain replacement. Chains, tensioners, gaskets, seals, everything involved so I didn't have to go piece together 47 parts from Ford.
