Default Rear Window Surround Seal

The surround has 2 seals. The seal around each fastener (14 of them?) seems to be the "real seal". This keeps rain water from entering the cabin. It is rubber pad glued to the washer that cannot be removed. The rubber is somewhat hardened. The second seal goes around the outer edge (top and side; bottom is open) and keeps most of rain water away from the "real seal". One side is glued to the surround that the other side butts against the sheet metal. The outer seal deteriorated from age and needs to be replaced.

What did/would you use for the bolt washer seals and the outer edge seal?

Thanks.

Use this stuff

for a good seal. Works great, but can be messy if you don't take precautions. Make sure you torque the nuts down a pull the adhesive on the window to the truck, if you wait to long the adhesive will harden.

I wouldn't use urethane on the back glass because if you ever need to remove the glass for any reason, urethane needs to be cut out and that can't be done with a bolt in glass. 3M Butyl tape is what you want.

ive just redone my rear window with butyl tape. its available in rolls. you can see its original route here
the outer seal around the plastic surround I used 3mm neoprene but on reflection its too thin 5mm would be better imo
I painted the plastic trim black too.. looks much better

They did away with that seal on the plastic in later year models, the glass butyl is what seals the water out, the plastic trim is decorative only.

Thank you, maccavy. I missed neoprene from first reading of your post.

I didn't know Ford did away with it later. Boy I went through a whole lot of trouble removing the old seal.
