Default Rear End Oil Capacity

All right, majority of our trucks have the 9.75" rear end, mine is a 2003 F150, 4wd, 5.4. I'm pretty sure the refill capacity for the rear end is 3 quarts. I replaced the old nasty, rusty diff cover with a g2 ribbed aluminum cover, #40-2012al. I put in 3 quarts gear oil & 4oz. of ford's friction modifier, & it was no where near enough. Today I bought another quart, (Royal Purple Synthetic 75w140) at $22.00, figuring I would probably have most of the quart left. It all went in & it's still not up to the level! I can't find the capacity for these covers anywhere! There were no instructions in the box with any kind of helpful info, such as mounting bolt torque or oil capacity. Does anybody have one of these & can you tell me how much oil they hold?????????????

Thanks!

I always parked on a level surface filled mine just before the point of flowing out the fill cap. Haven't done it on the truck yet tho. Cant imagine there is a super precise amount of fluid which is required.

the 8.8/9.75 is 2.75 qts.
I did mine a few weeks ago and that is what it got in.

Are you filling from the OEM fill plug on the diff or the plug on the cover? The plug on the cover looks high so if your using that your probably overfilling it.

I understand all the particulars in the manual are overkill and a good synthetic 75-140 gear oil is all that is needed and it is OK to fill to fill plug for proper level. I wish there was a drain plug. As my diff is not leaking I see no need to remove the cover. I will be using a siphon to remove the old oil and replace. Manual says change every 30 K! My truck has over 100K and never done as far as I know. (bought used.)

most likely. Still over 100K it is likely due. Just changed out the front diff on my 70,000 mile Wrangler and it was nearly black.

Doubt that you can get the siphon tube all the way to the bottom. You'll probably leave a bunch of old oil and stuff inside. If you remove the cover you can give the parts a good ocular assessment. Never know what might be about to fall apart, especially since you bought it used.

All of the crap settles at the bottom. You're not doing any good if you leave all of the metallic stuff sitting in the pumpkin. You should pull the cover, wipe it out, and brake clean the **** out of it all.

On my next change I am putting a cover with a drain on it. But I am using that merely to try and make it less messy. That cover is still coming off to get it clean.

Default Danger of overfill?

My driveway is on a very slight grade. With the fill plug on the front, I put 3 quarts of 75w140 and a 7oz tube of friction modifier in before it started to drip out the fill hole. Do I need to siphon 8oz of that out?
Also, when I took the cover off, and drained the old oil out, the residual oil the stayed on some of the gears was foamy (emulsified from water ingress, I assumed.) One big thing backing up that assumption was the vent hose running from the barb conn on the driver's side axle was split, and loose. I cut off the split and put the hose back on. What's the chance that whole hose is deteriorated and needs replaced?
