Default Rear Axles

I have been searching various forums for information on rear differentials that came in our trucks. I have found mostly that everybody seems to think that ALL 4.6L trucks came with 8.8" rear ends. I went and checked on mine because I was 100% sure mine was a 9.75" rear end, and sure enough it was. I just wanted to make this to say that these people that say "100% all 4.6L trucks came with 8.8" rear ends" are wrong because my 4.6L came with a 9.75". I hope some body finds this informative because I know that there were some people that researched their truck and stumbled on those misleading bits of information. That is all. Thank you.

All 4.6L trucks did come with 8.8". Must have been swapped like it was said above.

Well I find it very hard to believe that I have purchased 2 F-150s with 4.6L engines that have the 9.75" axle. Both came from the same dealership within 4 months of each other.

It's well documented on several forums that all 4.2L V6s and all 4.6L V8s came from the factory with the 8.8 and all 5.4s came with the 9.75.

Can you post a pic of the rear diff cover on your truck? The 8.8 and 9.75 both have distinctly different covers on them.

Must have been special order. I see weird stuff like that every once and a while with the vehicles that come through the dealer I work at

OP is right. Some 4.6L's have a 9.75 sterling axle.

My 4.6L screw has a 9.75 rear and 8.8 front, with 3.73's - from the factory.

read all about it here:
