Default Pre-Cat delete?

Has anyone deleted their pre cats?
I have a 97 4.2 and my cats need replacing anyway (they are reallllly plugged) I thought that while im down there putting cats in, I may as well delete the precats so I dont have to pay for two cats and two pre cats.

Just curious if im going to get a CEL?
Will I notice a little better sound?

Any help appreciated

There are tons of threads on here about that.. Mm it depends on where you live. And you can either delete them or just cut them off and use the fouler trick.. Everyone is gonna tell you differently. Some will say you will get a CEL some say you won't.. But keep in mind it's also illegal. And it may mess up your engine. ( MAY )

Thanks for the reply.
Its not illegal where I live.

Why would it mess up the engine? I thought it would help it run better due to better flow. I could be very wrong though...

Main thing Im worried about is a CEL / DTC.

Well if it's not illegal than good.. And the reason why it would mess the engine up it cause with out the cats your o2 sensor is gonna know and it's gonna freak and throw a code.. See when your engine heats up the honey comb in the cats gets bright red. The unburned gases that comes out of the engine gets burned in your cats. K with out your cats on your sensors are gonna sense unburned gas not getting burned so it will throw a code.

I'm keeping the cats... I'm deleting the pre-cats.
If I have the main cats think that will still happen.

I thought they were set up as post cat with the main's being up front. Are they the other way around? Or is it just two sets of catalytic converters per side?

There is the exhaust manifold --> O2 sensor --> precat (its an elbow) --> Cat --> O2 sensor

Any idea which cat "scrubs" more?

I would like to remove the one that does less to the exhaust.

The reason is purely financial. Replace 2 cats = $260. Replace 4 cats = $520

I know magnaflow has direct highflow kits that knock down from 4 cats to two, completely deleting the pre's.
