Default My fuel mileage makes no sense!!

I drove to Maine on friday in my truck. I drove up friday with a 460 and a C6 in the bed, I got 15.5 MPG. I came back empty and got 15 mpg. I drove around 70 the whole way using the cruise control as much as possible. Why would I get better mileage loaded than empty?

Did you fill up in between? Cleaner gas on the way back perhaps.

Was there an elevation drop? I have familiy in north Georgia, and I get slightly better mileage going from Ga to Florida, than I get going north due to the elevation change. Just a thought.

Ive found sometimes when Im hauling a little load I get better mileage, and of course it handles better w/ weight over the rear tires.

Default What Change?

I don't think a change of only three percent is significant enough to draw the question; however, a remote possibility is this:Pulling the hills with the load had the throttle open a little wider thus reducing the engine pumping losses, increasing the combustion expansion ratio with a resultant increase in engine efficiency.

You know I think I figured it out. Fords are just meant to work and show their appreciation to the owner when they get to.
