Default Popping noise during acceleration at highway speeds

2001 5.4 4x4 220,000 miles

This symptom recently started. It is an intermittent problem, doesn't happen anytime. At 60+ mph when accelerating I will get a loud popping sound and some bucking/hesitation.

I have had 3 coils go bad and this doesn't feel like the average misfire associated with that. There is also no CEL like when a coil goes bad.

Spark plugs are around 5,000 miles old. I used motorcraft and no anti-seize. Also not my first spark plug job on this truck, so everything was done correctly and torqued properly.

An initial thought was a blown out spark plug. But wouldn't I get those symptoms at any speeds if I was running on 7 plugs?

Any suggestions? Thanks.

Man, I would stop asap and re check all those plugs. Get a socket on them and make sure they are snug.

Yeah that is the next step. Fun to do when it's in the 20's and you have no garage.

Thanks. We have a snow storming coming up here at the end of the week and I still need to fix a 98 Cherokee that is having problems.

Spark plugs? All 8 were replaced. Coils, just the 3 that went bad.

Have an ultra gauge? If not get one. They are cheap 65 bucks and the can read pending codes. The ones that haven't throw the cel yet. It has saved me from 4 hard break downs. Best money I ever spent.

All spark plugs are good and tight. What else can I check or what else could cause this?
