2001 f150 no forward gears but reverse works
Hello. I'm new to this site. I'm looking for some help with a 2001 f150 XLT 4r70w Trans.
A couple of weeks ago while pulling away from a stop sign I lost all forward gears but reverse worked fine. There was no noise it was like I bumped into neutral. The truck has 170.000 miles on it and I have serviced the trans when scheduled. Also would add B&G treatment to it. The trans always worked great with no issues before this. Check for codes and there was none. Pulled pan and every thing looked pristine, clean fluid hardly anything on the magnet or in the pan. Talked to at least 5 of the local shops and did some research on-line. Pretty much all the feed back I got led to a internal problem. Dropped the trans and disassembled. Didn't find anything wrong paying attention to the forward drum assy as it is known as a weak point. All the components could have been reused, but having 170.000 miles on it I went ahead and got a quality rebuild kit. So new clutch disk seals bands bushings along with all new borg warner solenoids new solenoid harness, new bonded accumulators shift kit and shift range finder. Air tested pistons and seals during assembly. Reinstalled trans and NO forward gears. Check all related fuses and pin out connections. Checked for new codes, None. So back to square one. Any expert advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Dan.

Sill thinking forward drum here. You get no forward even if you drop the selector to 1?

I get that, Darrin. I am trying to diagnose if the drum is cracked/stripped, or has a leaky seal.

Thanks for the reply. At this point I don't believe it is internal. Like I mentioned there is nothing in drive 1st 2nd or anything when I push the od button. I have it on stands and when in drive the rear wheals don't move at all and I can rock them back and forth just like in neutral. If it was the drum or a seal you would get some kind of movement. I can rev the engine and nothing at all. This is the way it failed and when I disassembled it I found nothing wrong. While apart I closely checked the forward drum found no cracks at all and all the splines and planetary gear assy in perfect condition.

Sounds like you've got your diagnostics down pat. Good luck.

Could your gear selector somehow be frayed (stretched) or something? Just trying to think away from the actual transmission.

Shift cable could be stretched, yes. If that was the case their would be a good bit of play on the gear selector. Unless the cable got caught on something I cant see how it could all of a sudden stretch to the point of not shifting into drive
