So I've been having some intermittent airbag warning light issues and have been watching it for clues. Meanwhile, upon starting all the gauges on the cluster will sometimes sweep min - max - min - but sometimes they don't! Does anyone know what would control this behavior? Like if everything was operating normally, do the gauges normally sweep everytime you start the truck? I can't remember how it worked before I started having problems.

I'm *NOT* Skylar...
I don't know about the cluster sweep, but if you count the number of airbag light flashes, it indicates a coded error. Example: two flashes, a pause, seven flashes equals airbag code 27. There are several codes...

i get 21 and 25 codes and half the time no code - does your cluster sweep everytime?

I know 97 is its own animal, but mine does not sweep. Neither does my 98 Expy. However, my 06 Escape does, and I've seen other Fords that do sweep as well. Not sure when it all started though.

My 2001 does not sweep
but, if you unplug the cluster at any point (to change bulbs or do other work on the cluster) and plug it back in it sweeps the first time. After that no guage sweep. I dont know if that's relevant or not, information non the less.
maybe there's a potential short in the wire harness. Just thinking out loud here.
airbag I know nothing about

I think the gauge sweep had to do with battery voltage at some point. If you're battery wasn't holding charge as well as a new one, you'd get the sweep. I remember my 09 started doing it and sure enough the battery needed replacing shortly after.
found this:
09 and newer trucks do this everytime at startup while 08 and older (not sure of how old but wanting to say 97) do this on two conditions. 1. Bad battery or alternator. 2. You've entered the dealer ic test mode (some call it engineering test mode). It's purpose is for the gauges to find their min and max points of their ranges. They twitch around at 0 briefly to find their min. Or to rezero themself and move all the way to their max point. They do this to be able to accurately display what they represent. Ie. 60mph is 60moh not 75mph. If they never did this you could theoretically move the needles past max and back around to 0. Instead of 90mph. It's used in a math formula for converting voltage to physical movement. 09+ trucks do this eveytime they start to ensure they stay calibrated. 08 and older do this when they have lost their memory of the last calibration.(ur battery or alternator is crap and not letting you keep your memories for anything including fuel trims and soft dtcs.) That's why if you replace the battery ir alternatpr it stops because its not losing power to its memory. If you disconnect the battery for long enough it will do this everytime. And the test mode is to test the gauge functions. Just search for ic test on this site and you should find what I'm talking about.

Well, all of this info makes me wonder if you've got the classic cracked solder joint(s) on the back of the cluster. If it loses contact, then reconnects, maybe that's why you are sweeping sometimes.

Not 100% sure on this but the gauges should do a sweep on startup when ever the battery is disconnected and reconnected or if it dies and it's jump started. My 99 does this and my mom's 02 excursion with the v10 does this. The cause of this is likely the battery's on its way out. If it's starting to get cold out where you are then it would make sense that it's starting to occur now. I'd get the battery and alternator checked.
