Default Faded and chalky paint on hood/roof options

My '98 F150 flare side is basically a weekend work truck now - definitely not a "goin' to town rig" as they say. The hood and roof have very faded paint - chalky with some of the primer showing through (see pictures). I am looking for options to help protect it. Should I try to buff/polish it? Should I use some "shine juice" to help seal it up? What options are our there that are DIY and don't cost an arm and a leg.

Ain't nothing $6,000 and a trip to the local paint shop won't fix.

You got no paint left The sun has eaten it away. You can't buff paint that ain't there.

Anything I can put on it to keep the dirt and moldy stuff from setting in so hard?

Not really. Paint just don't last 25 years in the sun. Top of hood and top of roof is the first places to go usually. My plan had been to paint mine this year but I haven't gotten to it. Too busy with other stuff.

You could try those colored waxes but that's really just snake oil . You'll just be $10 poorer. Like spending $20 for a kit to polish oxidized headlights and then are ina week they look as bad as they did before. Just got to bite the bullet and do it right.

How much do you care about it? I'd sand it, get some high build primer, scotch brite that, then rattle can it with automotive single stage paint. Probably get that all done for 100 or less.

Looks like it's Oxford White?

White's easy to match so a rattle can maybe possible as long as it's compatible with what you got. I did similar on an 84 Ford the silver paint flaked off on after about two years. Anything looked better than gray primer/rusty metal

I was blessed with having one of those Hyundai's with the peeling clearcoat. The suv wasn't worth a paint job at that age and mileage so I rattle canned the roof. I have spray equipment and hit some spots with a touchup gun. People didn't notice it and I traded the thing in for a Focus. The trick is no wind at all. In the summer, early before the bugs come out. A little sanding between coats may help but the final product will depend on your skillset and it isn't going to look like a factory job.
