oil leak
'99, 4.6L V8 XLT
added a quart of oil my about eight weeks ago just before a trip.
at 112K miles, it did not suprise me.
Picked up the supplies this week to do an oil change and discovered it was a about quart and a half low. Been about 2k - 3k miles since then.
It does not blow smoke- not at start up, nor idle, nor highway acceleration.
My garage floor is spotless.
Now i realize it has to be going somewhere but __where__ ??
The engine compartment could use some cleaning but i really don't see anything on the valve covers or manifold.
Any ideas where to search?
THANKS !

If the 4.6 is built the same as the 5.4, you need to look under the intake manifold. How to describe, the 5.4 has the intake sitting up a few inches from the block, the underside is exposed to the air, its not part of the crankcase as is other engines. Believe if you look around the alternator you will see this cavity. Head gasket seepange collects in this area, its is trapped and will not hit the ground yet.

My 1997 F-150 4.6 seems to have the same problem but only sips the oil...Its not a major problem so far...Me and a friend of mine were putting in new spark plugs and he noticed oil on the back of the moter by Spark Plug #4...could be a Valve Cover Leak? Im going to check soon on my truck....
