Oil change question
Hello everyone, I have a 99 f150 xl 4.2 V6 and it is time for an oil change. I just passed 200k miles and I was wondering what brand oil would be good for this truck at this mileage. This truck is also a daily driver. The truck calls for 5w-30. Would Pennzoil be good for it at that mileage? I received this truck from my grandfather and I assume he's always been putting 5w-30 but he would get the cheapest kind he could find (sometimes Fred's brand oil). And also what brand filter would be good. Thanks.

I’m not CAFE, so I’m not gonna fine my truck for not running a 5w “energy saving” oil.

Motorcraft 5w30 syn-blend, and a Motorcraft filter should keep you going.

I'm sure that genuine Ford (Motorcraft) oil and filters are of good quality, but they also cost a lot more than others, at least where I live. While I have always done my own oil changes using 'warranty-approved' oil, I tend to buy what's on sale (Valvoline, Quaker State, Formula 1, Motomaster and others) and I've never had an engine oil-related problem. Mind you, I am careful to follow the recommended oil change intervals in the owners manual.

Yes, we have Walmart but I have never seen Motorcraft products there. I even checked the Walmart Canada website for Motorcraft and nothing came up. I believe that Canadians wanting Motorcraft are pretty much stuck with buying from a Ford dealer. According to one post on this site, Motorcraft filters are about 12 bucks. I can find Quaker State filters on sale for about half that price. One post from Vancouver stated that semi-synthetic Motorcraft oil from a dealer was over 13 bucks per liter! That would mean about $65 for enough to do an oil change, whereas other brands can be had for about $15 for five liters. So as long as I'm getting warranty-approved oil, I'll stick with the program!

I have this exact same truck and ran the valvoline high mileage 10w-30 after about 180k and as far as the filter goes i get the wix brand. i see too many vids on youtube of how crappy the fram oil filters are but that could be due to neglect of changing it.. I honestly think just changing oil on time every time is way important than the brand.. My truck ran strong up until 250k when i got tired of it and wanted to do a diesel swap... the 4.2 was a great little motor in my opinion for fuel economy and can even tow some heavy loads. Keep up the maintenance and that thing will damn near run forever.

Glad this question came up, I will have to do a change soon on my new to me 04 with 100k miles and the 4.8. I have run mobil 1 synth and Fram filters for 15 years on other vehicles with no issues. early 18 I used the mobil 1 cartridge filter on my wifes buick regal and when I changed the filter in june it was caved in on the one side, that is last I will ever use those. mine calls for 5w/20 anyone else running the mobil/fram on their 4.8?
