I've heard that particular style of black headlight has terrible output for our trucks. Because our trucks use a reflective housing and that particular style of headlight has a very small reflective housing in it. Can't say anything about the chrome ones though. I'd recommend using the black lightning style headlights if you want black, really for chrome too, only because they have the best reflective housing to put your light out on the road.

Thats kind of what I was thinking.
Well, thanks for all the great advice, everyone!
I ended up getting a pair of standard Silverstars, and some 3m headlight polish. I installed one of the new headlights with one of the old ones in the other side so I could do a direct comparison before polishing. I could see a slight difference, but knowing that they have the same output just a different color temperature, that didn't really surprise me. I drove home and polished the lenses, which were badly yellowed. That made a huge difference. I actually have a beam now, rather than the ruddy yellow glow I had before. So all in all pretty successful, but if someone were to ask me if I thought the Silverstars were worth it, I would suggest they wait until a bulb burns out, and make sure their lenses are clean. I'm going to hold off on the Lightning heads for now, but will definitely get a pair when I'm ready to put a bit more money into the truck.
There are so many headlight threads about HID bulbs, and HID projector retrofits... I would love to do a retrofit when I have $300+ lying around, but right now I don't.
So, my question is this: Is there an upgrade for the stock bulbs that isn't an HID? A plug and play halogen that's brighter than stock? What is the best/brightest OEM replacement bulb?
I've been doing a lot of long drives in the mountains at night. I will eventually do a retrofit and also add an LED light bar or two, but for now, I need a cheap upgrade. Especially around dusk, my headlights are virtually useless. Naturally I need to clear up the lenses, but I don't know how much that is really going to do, and I would like a noticeable upgrade.
Thanks!

Hehehehe 20K Lumens.
I always value new info, but you're right, between the silverstars and polishing the lense I *was* happy for a short time. The lenses cloud up so fast I was polishing them every couple months. I think even without the HID retrofit the late model clear lenses would probably make a big difference, and I will likely get a set at some point, but I don't drive my truck much anymore - just hay runs and wood harvest, with an upcoming hunting trip I. The horizon.

LEDs have improved over the years so as long as you don't get the cheapest bottom of the barrel Chinesium trash, the glare shouldn't be a problem, especially if you adjust the headlights properly but please for the love of other folks' retinas, don't throw HID bulbs into the halogen lights with the clear lenses. Those can and will create dangerous glare for other drivers on the road and the light will be scattered so it won't even be good light for you either, will glare back at you off the reflective signs on the side of the road. LEDs with elements facing the 3 and 9 o'clock positions should be good though.
