Default Not another 2003 F150 Cold Weather Whistle issue

Hi guys,

I know theres a bunch of topics on this, however the problem is that all the threads I read about on this issue; no one whom ever changes something or tried to fix it, comes back and writes an update what fixed it.

Its cold here in Buffalo, 17F out and my truck is making a whistle driving it this morning, only for about 10 seconds. Letting it off the gas, goes away, some times it comes back again, all rpms and all different speeds.

I'm gearing towards the Alternator but before I go and dish out $100 which might not fix it, I'm wondering if more the one of you had same problem with a 2003 and did alternator and its fix, or replaced some tubing and fixed or whatever.

I'd like to kill this whistle Thanks in advance for the feedback.

Cheers!

I am not sure about the noise but, If you end up needing an alternator, Check around for a battery/alternator shop. We have one here in my town and he rebuilds them for around $40.00.

Quite often it's the PCV valve. Blow by and/or condensation freezing in the valve causing a restriction.

A whine when cold is most likely the PS pump. Between the two, they can get noisy when temps outside take a plunge.

Been more wet than cold here in Phoenix... Never had it happen before in the rain or the freezing temps.

Been raining the last few days.

I'll do some digging tomorrow to see if I can narrow it down.

I'm having the same issues with my 2006. This only occurs when it's cold outside, it's a very obvious whistle, like mentioned before get off the throttle instantly goes away. I see someone mentioned PCV valve, would changing it make it go away, I know my 4.6L doesn't have the heated PCV valve Maybe that's why they put those in other trucks

The 06 is heated electronically, but we are not talking about an 06, so it doesn't make any sense to compare.

BTW, I'm that "someone" that mentioned the PCV. My user name is jbrew and it's just 3 posts up ^^.

Changing the PCV valve may temporarily get rid of the noise, IF that's the problem, but like I said it's from blow-by which has to do with the way you drive your vehicle when it's cold outside. Also, Motorcraft ONLY has the proper valve for these trucks. Other replacements are too restrictive.

I'm surprised your 4.6L doesn't have a heated PCV valve. About 70% of them do and go by the Cold Climate System (system name). Even with the cold climate system, they can still suffer blow-by and freezing when conditions are met.

Yes my 4.6L has a standard PCV valve not the heated one, I thought the 5.4L got the heated one but either way it doesn't matter. I guess I could change it because they are cheap and see if it helps. Technically I guess it's not really an issue, just annoying. But thanks for the input

Most heated valves are standard valves w/10th gen engines. I believe the 02's are the only exception. Like I said , it's a system that heats the valve. Quite different from an 06...no comparison. How do you know it's not heated? What parts are missing?
