I have a 97 5.4 4x4 auto.
The truck doesn't downshift when climbing hills unless i really get on the gas. Also, it doesn't have the power that I feel it should have. Idle is perfect, no oil usage. Are these 2 different problems? Where should I start.

 

How's the gas milage?? have you checked your air filter? Fuel filter? pour some good fuel injector cleaner in the tank following the instructions of course... clean the MAF then go from there! there's some low cost possible solutions to your lack of power.

 

Air filter is new, fuel filter unknown as I've recently purchased. How do I clean the mass air flow? I'll try the filter this weekend.

 

Gettting about 14-15 MPG

 

you probably just need a good tune up. mine is the same way and im replacing everything in steps. you may want to try new plugs too

 

Plugs are new as well as wires. I am going to replace the fuel filter this weekend. MAF has been suggested to me. I am also trying to learn how to clean this.

 

MAF cleaner spray. Buy it. Do it.

 

my 01 5.4 is lacking A LOT of power too..... i have been reading through here and i saw a post where a guy did a complete tune "in steps" and the last thing he did was a new MAF sensor ......im gonna try one out and let you guys know within a day or 2
