5.4's 04-09 in the Vans are 2v engines with the newer designed, 8 thread sp holed heads. The 03-04 Expy with 5.4 are 2v engines. Believe me, we've researched this out very very well. Also, JBrew is quite knowledgeable with the 5.4's as is 97BadAss.

Hows the rust where you are ? Is there 97/98's in one piece in your area ? Where are you located mate, -New Zealand, Britain, Australia....Tasmania lol ?
Well, I would look at any model 97-03/some 04's within your price range. I purchased a 98 with 4.2L for my daughter (grad present) and did not like that engine, wouldn't purchase another personally. Any 97-03/04 w/V8 would be game. Major problem visual signs,- look for oil leakage at the passenger side head, - the starter and area around it will be wet with oil if there's a problem. Shine a light behind the alternator and down into the block cavity. Look for coolant/oil sitting in the valley. Also check coolant color and trans fluid color..just the color/cleanliness can tell you a lot. Also look at the passenger side exhaust manifold, the rear exhaust studs for breakage. That's a fairly common problem, but it's a fixable one without too much hair loss.

Then a 4.6 will be more than enough. There is actually a really large aftermarket for those engines in the states since they came in the so many different platforms.

I'm from the UK...mid country..only real old cars have rust issues. I've got a 04 Monaro (Pontiac got) and it has zero rust..but I'm assuming an older truck may have some small issues..
I've got the go ahead for Sunday so will keep you boosted how it goes ..thanks for the info

Yep, no problem, you should have many to choose from. Check out the oil leakage as posted and look for bad coolant. Those are probably to two possible worst case problems. Oil leakage can be major work, bad coolant color could signify a head gasket problem in the near future. Both could mean a replacement engine will be needed soon. Other than that these trucks are fairly resilient. As long as maintenance was kept up...

please stop the arguing guys.. my email is going nuts.
post me some useful info on whats more than likely going to be a f150 circa 96-98 era.
nothing else matters. not wanting to go much older.. and cant afford newer.
don't want to be buying something I regret from bad info.
Ive had many a car in my life of all sorts.. my last sale was a small kit car I built myself , I know what to look for in a car. but if theres something specific to look out for . ie as mentioned leaky back windows. specific areas or rust or any common faults my ears are open
Thanks to the guys being useful

Wow. That was an interesting cleanup.
Regulars: Thank you so much for doing your best to keep this thread on track while I was away. You did a great job, and that's (thankfully) becoming more common around here. I do like to enjoy my weekends without always having to fix trolls
OP: As advised, yes, listen to the regulars here. They know their shtick. Ignore that other user whose information has been removed from this thread.
Carry on smartly. Next on the agenda, administrative action against the offending user.
