Well, I went to get it today and it would not start.
It has not been started since December, and not really driven since October.
Put a battery charger on it for about 2 hrs, then put it to "jump start" mode. It turned over slowly then nothing. Charger on for another hour, I get it to start, but it is running rough and sputtering for around 30 seconds then dies. Will not turn over after than, just turn the key and get a click. Bring the battery to the parts store, it is dead. Get a new battery (old one was about a year old, so it cost us nothing) hook it up and go to start it, just a slight turn then click. Charge the new battery for an hour, then put it on jump mode and it turns over a few times then click.
Charge it another 2 hours and it just clicks. Try to jump start with an Explorer, nothing, just a single click and all the lights dim.
Did I get another bad battery or is the starter messed up? What else can I do?
Just a note, I had a little plug in volt meter and it was reading 12.2-12.4 v with the charger on. The one time I got it started it was reading 13.8 v or so when I looked at it. The last few times when I went to start it and it just clicked it would drop to 6-8 v.
Biggest problem is the truck is 40 miles away, I had to have my aunt bring me home (my wife dropped me off, she was going to wait but she had to get to work).

That could be a bad connection at the starter or the selenoid. I like to look for the easy pieces to the puzzles first. The battery sounds like it should be fine but I would put all my money on a bad or corroded connection.

Yea, I was thinking maybe connection too. The battery connections were good as were the ones to the firewall. I did not check the rest since my aunt had to get me home.
I left the battery charger on slow charge under the hood and will probably go back out there Thursday and mess with it more.
She actually offered to have it towed to my house, but that would cost too much I think.
I was going to check all cables and maybe even pull the starter and have it checked (are the starters hard to get to on these?).

It really does sound like a bad connection especially since the truck was sitting for a long time. I would check all the connections at the firewall and at the starter solenoid on the starter by cleaning them of dirt and corrosion and then tightening them back up. It takes a lot of power to turn the starter and the power is lost with the bad connections.
Good luck and I am very envious of you with that great looking truck that I know is going to be a lot of fun to fix up and be a great truck to drive when you have it finished.

Well, went out there today. Checked all connections, they looked good, but I sanded them anyway just to make sure.
Pulled the starter (what a pain) and brought it to the parts store. It tested good. Crap.
The manager there used to work at a Ford dealership so we talked for a bit. He said the only thing he can think of is either the engine had a stuck injector and filled a cylinder with fuel and basically "hydrolocked" it or the engine is seized.
I got back and reinstalled the starter and tried to turn the crank manually and could not do it. It was almost 5 and needed to get home I was going to pull the plugs but the coil on plug looks like I would have to remove the fuel rail to get to the coil pack, plus the back 2 plugs on each side look like a royal pain to get to, and I just did not have time for that.
I am getting close to saying forget it. If it was sitting in my driveway it would be a different story, I could work on it whenever, but being an hour away just makes it impossible.
I am really going to have to think about it and what I want to do. I am debating getting it towed here, but not sure. A tow would be around $250 from the estimates I got.

Ouch dude... It would be nice to get the thing running again, but if it comes down to the issue where its going to take more than it should to fix it, then it might be time to think about what you're going to do with it. Either way, I wanted to sub to the thread and see how it turns out. Either way, I'm sure you'll make the best decision.

Too Loud? Too Bad!
You don't have to remove the fuel rail to get the coil pack off. But it does make it easier, and its not hard to get off. Good time to check the injectors, and the electrical connections for them too. Also just an idea....anyone you know with a truck? You could rent a tow dolly from u-haul for around 20 bucks.
