Yea, it's not a E40D unless the dealer through a 97/98 trans into that truck and reprogrammed. That makes no sense. I get the facts straight , or better yet, just take it in and have it flashed. The upload will come right from Ford Motor....100 bucks,,,done.

This is exactly why you need an assembled vehicle title. You've changed a major component from as built. You say, "They won't touch it." I'm sure they mean is they won't certify the emissions but they'll still test it. Does the truck meet the standards, certified or not? If it does your problem isn't mechanical, electrical or electronic, it's a documentation problem which you can fix. Everyone that uses a Ford Control Pack goes through this because the PCM's don't have a VIN.

I'd try a different dealer, one not so lazy and worth it's water. When you swap w/different V8' s (4six to 5four) for instance ,- to get the most out it you take it in for flash. Yea, some dealerships (service reps are the problem) are idiots. Just as swapping out the V8 modular for a V10 in these 150's. The dealer or a custom tuner can handle it. Look at the sticky "4r100 swap notes". Has to be done correctly and is model year specific. This is due to changes to the 4R100 through the model years. The 4R100 was updated quite a few times throughout the tenth generation.

Inspections for Unusual Vehicles
Specially constructed vehicles and collector cars must be inspected at a referee center.
Vehicles imported into California are classified as grey market vehicles and require a referee inspection.
If a vehicle’s engine is changed and it is different than the one originally installed in the vehicle, an inspection at the referee may be required.
Vehicles that have been modified for use by individuals with disabilities may be inspected at a referee center.
Referee centers can certify vehicles labeled as gross polluters, which are those vehicles that fail a Smog Check inspection at two times the pass/fail standard.
This is from: https://www.smogcheck.ca.gov/Consume...ram/index.html
https://www.smogcheck.ca.gov/Consume..._Vehicles.html
There's just something not right about all this. You have a grey vehicle which affords you certain exceptions from CA vehicles. I've known too many people that have moved to CA and never went through this nonsense. Specially if there vehicles were in compliance. But hey, if you're enjoying it?
