My TT 5.4 2V build thread

I was not impressed by the 4r100 at all. With minor upgrades the 4r70 held its own with cryo parts. Billet is the best, but not sure which route to go now. May try a billet 5r110 and go from there. That just requires me to buy a new trans controller and change drivelines.

I don't know why you haven't just went with a TH400 yet? Didn't you ditch the 4wd anyway?

What makes you think a 4r70w can handle the torque?

Isnt the 4R100 a bigger tranny? Mustangs and N/A F-150s had 4R70Ws. Where the supercharged L's & HDs along with the F-250s had the 4R100s which tells me it's stronger. Right? Wayne

I know of at least one TH400 in a cobra that breaks the 1,000rwhp mark. That's high rent though.
Yes, The 4R100 is a better & bigger Trans in stock form. From what I've read, using a better shaft and components makes the 4R70 a more durable trans.
I wonder how hard you have to hit the gears in either transmission to break them. I can see in racing how the trans would blow out and in rock crawling (kinda) but for normal street driving, I'm not sure either one is going to blow up just running through the gears.
My last T45 went through 4 clutches in 5 years at 640rw but the trans was still in great shape.
..as always my disclaimer that I'm a car guy and not a truck expert.

Try throwing over 1100rw tq to any of those. Yes, they are stronger stock. But even stock they are only built to handle 450-500tq. I have tried cryogenic parts in it, billet sun gears and drums, intermediate cluthes. The 4r70 has a little small torque conver ratio at 1.9 vs 2.1 and its much lighter and I can run my stock PCM again. You can build a 4r70 to handle a lot of power right at the 4r100 level. 4r70w's are put it alot of terminators putting down big numbers too. My problem is the weight and the torque. For the hassle I would never install a 4r100 again on a 4x4. Not enough gain for the money and effort.
5r110 billet or back to a all billet 4r70

The 250 diesels have different specs and 8 bolt flywheels than the 250 ld. The 250 ld is the weakest of all the 4r100's. The stock lightning trans help up to just my supercharger at 12psi, but it broke once I got into the 20's as expected. Once upgraded I could snap a built 4r100 by stomping it down in 3rd doing 50 down the highway.
