Hello all, after changing my plug wires, started the veh. and now I have two codes, 1537 & 1538. anyone have experience with changing these things? it appears to be a major job. Thanks

For that to suddenly appear after changing your wires leads me to believe you've got an issue with something in the wires. When you put the new wires in, did you make sure the flat part of the boot that goes on the plug was parallel to the valve covers?

I guess I assumed you had a V8 in my previous post. What motor do you have?

got a 1998 f150xl 4x4. these were aftermarket generic wires. I'll install the old ones back and see if it changes anything. but what would spark plug wires have to do with the imrc? Thanks

Oops... I looked up P1357 and P1358 which are the ignition diagnostic monitors.

I apologize for that mix up.

Anyway, to your real problem. In 98 the intake manifold runner was ran by vacuum. I still need to know what motor you've got though, and then I can help better.

Perhaps if you ask him how many plug wires did he change, - we could figure it out for him

sorry, about the omissions. 4.2l 6cylinder 5 speed. changed all 6 plug wires. thanks

My email never sent me a notification you replied. Sorry. It is on the back of the lower intake. I would first check and make sure you somehow didn't knock the vacuum line off, or crack it, etc. I can only find a picture of a 99 on google images, and it is a bit different than yours. The 97 and 98's were the only years that were vacuum. The one in the pic is electric.

Also... there's a white plastic bushing you can see supporting the control arm in a couple of areas. Those like to deteriorate and break. Sometimes when that happens it will allow the arm to fall out of the hole. Or not fully engage. You can purchase those individually instead of the entire IMRC motor.

It also appears there is a left and a right. I thought one motor did both sides. I can't recall seeing the other side on the back of the manifold, so it may be on the front of the intake.

The bushings are Dorman part#47099 if that is your issue. They run about 6 or 7 bucks for the kit.



And this is what your IMRC motor looks like. Dorman 911101 for the left and 911100 for the right.



I really think you'll find a vacuum leak though.

thanks for your help, this appears to be a very involved job. haven't had time to do anything to the truck. drove it a couple of times and felt like the engine is just a little off. thanks again for your time. Wow, just noticed that I'm a senior member. hope no one asks for my advice, since I'm still learning myself.
