Default My 1998 f150 gear indicator is off, what went wrong ? How should I fix it

1998 f150 panel gear indicator is off by one shift, Now R is parking, N is reverse, D is neutral, How can I fix this? Preciate someone can show me! Thanks

Yes, posting in the 1997 - 2003 Ford F150 section would most likely bring you more/better help but as a guess it's very possibly in the linkage underneath that moves the lever for the readout. The linkage simply wears out over a period of time depending on usage.

Well your right on.


You might be able to adjust the gear indicator but more than likely it's broken. So you have to either buy the indicator and cable assembly or new plastic piece

Take a look at this video, he'll tell you how to fix and adjust it for free. I know in the video it is for a ranger, but it should be the same concept on our trucks, just the part will be in a different location I imagine.

Actually there are 2 bolts holding the shiftier on in the steering colum. They come loose and this happens. If you get under there and tighten them that will fix it. common problem. Locktight on the threads is good..
