Your range is actually 15% (maybe 20 can't recall right now)range between top and bottom. 80-100 is most likely what people usually see. It's more important to see all the cylinders close to each other instead if seeing them at a specified #. That being said 40 is no bueno

Do the compression test again but this time put a few drops of oil in each cylinder before the test

Yeah.... if the cylinders were dry, it would be an issue in reading accurately.
