I drove a rental car about 6 weeks ago... 1900 mi round trip averaged 51 MPG. At times got 57-58 mpg for dozens of miles. Not too shabby. The gas savings alone paid for renting the car. It actually makes no sense whatsoever to drive low mileage vehicles on long trips. It costs you money and gas and maintenance and it puts significant wear and tear on your vehicle. Ie it uses up a good chunk of its life. Renting under my work profile code is cheap and I get a loss and damage waiver for free. Even without that I pay with a credit card that has primary insurance so I don't need a loss and damage waiver, it's basically free.
