Default Looking for proper driveshaft length 97 f150 4x4 4.6

Broke a driveshaft on my 97 F150. It's a 4x4 extended cab regular box with a 4.6. I've seen a few different numbers and I'm wondering what I would need for length? The truck is an automatic with on the floor 4x4 if that makes a difference, any other info needed I can find. Just wondering because I've seen a few different numbers out there, curious of what will fit as if I cannot find someone local to make one I will go to a salvage yard. I am not paying $800 from Ford, not a chance.

Yea price one out at a shaft shop first. Not the dealer. although it's a good idea to know what they want, - prob not practical. With shaft shops, that's all they do most of the time. Measure the one you have, - have the measuremeant in inches and metric before looking around.

A shaft shop will have their own part no and they do differ per truck model.

I can't measure the one I have, it's broke, that's the problem I'm having. If I go to a shaft shop I'm going to need to know a length or if I want to buy from a salvage yard I also need to know I'm getting the right length.

For someone to know which driveshaft toy have they would also need to know which transmission, and the wheelbase of the truck.

I know the wheelbase is 139 inches sorry I thought I included it but I'm not 100% sure what transmission is in it. It's an automatic and I have a strong suspicion it's a ae4od.

Yea, you don't HAVE TO measure the shaft itself. Just measure the distance between the pinion and tail shaft. You don't have to even do that 9 chances out 10 a shaft shop or salavge yard will know exactly what you need with given (said) vehicle information.

For instance a 97 Supercab 4.6L 4x4 w/m5od transmission 5.5' bed 139" WB.

Not sure that's what you have, but you get the idea.

Yea, just look at your door plate for trans info. I believe it'll either be A or U. Good possibility that it's a E40D like you said, - but it could be 4r75w.
